Croatia sold 312,171 green power certificates in one day, at about EUR 1.12 to 1.46 each
CROPEX guarantee-of-origin auctions on 28 July 2026: HROTE sold 244,413 wind certificates for Q2 2026 at EUR 1.42 and 39,366 biomass certificates at EUR 1.33. Solar lots went for EUR 1.31 to 1.36. One certificate stands for 1 MWh of renewable output. It is a paper attribute, not delivered power.
A company that wants to call its electricity renewable, without building anything, can buy the paper that proves someone else's green megawatt-hour. In Croatia this July, that paper was cheap.
CROPEX, the Croatian power exchange, published guarantee-of-origin auction results dated 28 July 2026. Energetika Vesti summarised them the next day: 312,171 guarantees of origin sold across six auctions. A guarantee of origin is a certificate that normally stands for 1 MWh of electricity from a named renewable source.
The biggest lot was 244,413 wind certificates for Q2 2026 output, offered by HROTE, the market operator that runs the incentive scheme. They sold at EUR 1.42 each. HROTE also sold 39,366 biomass certificates at EUR 1.33. ENNA Next sold 22,698 Croatian wind certificates at EUR 1.33 and 2,669 German wind certificates at EUR 1.46, the highest price of the day. Smaller lots: 1,174 solar at EUR 1.36, 1,012 biomass at EUR 1.31 and 136 biogas at EUR 1.12. Koer sold 703 June solar certificates at EUR 1.31.
Before the sale, Power Trading News Europe had flagged at least 311,468 certificates on offer, about 91% of them from HROTE.
Analogy: a certificate is a receipt, not a meal. You can buy the receipt for someone else's dinner and frame it. Your own fridge stays the same.
Good: a public, dated price for renewable attributes in Croatia. A company doing its emissions reporting can put a real market number on buying certificates instead of guessing.
Bad: a certificate does not move power to your site and does not change your bill. It does nothing for the evening hours when your own panels are dark.
Ugly: at around EUR 1.1 to 1.5 per MWh, the paper is cheap enough that some buyers may stop there. It backs a claim. It does not shield a factory from price spikes. On-site generation, storage or a fixed supply contract do that.
