Dubrovnik airport plans solar roofs over its car parks and a 3.3 MWh battery, with no power sold to the grid

Zracna luka Dubrovnik opened a preliminary market consultation for a EUR 4.2 million solar microgrid: almost 1.9 MW of new solar canopies on top of 140 kW already on the terminal roof, plus a 3.3 MWh battery in a container. Turnkey contract, works limited in peak season, target operation 2028.

An airport car park in Dalmatia in August is a field of hot metal. Dubrovnik airport wants to put a roof over it that also makes electricity.

JUGinfo reported on 11 August 2026 that Dubrovnik airport has started preparing a solar microgrid with a large battery, worth EUR 4.2 million. Solar canopies would cover short-stay and long-stay parking, the rent-a-car zone and staff parking, plus a canopy in front of terminals B and C and the passenger terminal roof, where a solar plant already runs.

The new plants would total almost 1.9 MW, on top of 140 kW on the terminal roof today. A 3.3 MWh battery is planned in a container on a green strip by the long-stay car park. A digital control system will run panels, battery and users as one microgrid, a small private grid that manages its own supply. The power stays inside the airport and is not fed into the public grid.

The contract will be turnkey: one contractor from design and permits to commissioning. Site works may be limited from 15 April to 15 October because of peak traffic. The plan has the system running in 2028. For now this is a preliminary market consultation, open until 16 August, before a formal tender.

Analogy: it is a hotel that fits a water tank on its own roof and keeps the water for its own taps. It sells nothing to the street. It just buys less from the mains.

Good: a clear self-use design with solar and storage sized together, a budget and a named contracting model. Car-park canopies are a template for any site with big parking and little roof.

Bad: the battery's power rating is not published, so we cannot say how many hours it runs. No savings estimate or grant is named. This is a consultation, not a signed contract.

Ugly: the works window avoids the tourist season and the target is 2028. A summer-peak site gets its battery after at least two more summers of peak bills.
