HEP confirmed its Sukosan solar plant comes with a battery of up to 200 MWh, and the estimate rose to EUR 65 million
HEP told eZadar the Sukosan project covers about 56 MW of solar plus a battery of up to 50 MW and 200 MWh, estimated at EUR 65 million. Earlier figures were about EUR 38 million for the solar alone. Building permit in hand, EBRD-backed two-stage tender running, construction announced for 2027.
This is utility scale, not a workplace meter. But it shows what a solar farm with a four-hour battery costs on Croatian paper.
eZadar reported on 5 August 2026 that HEP confirmed its Sukosan solar project in Zadar county includes a plant of about 56 MW installed and a battery storage system of up to 50 MW and up to 200 MWh. HEP's estimate for the plant with the battery is EUR 65 million. Earlier public figures spoke of about EUR 38 million for the solar plant, with storage planned as a later phase.
HEP says the battery will let the plant store output and deliver it flexibly, depending on the state of the power system and the market. A building permit has been issued. An international tender with the EBRD is running as an open two-stage procedure with prequalification. Construction is announced for 2027.
By our arithmetic, 200 MWh at 50 MW is four hours at full power. That is desk division, not a HEP figure.
Analogy: it is a farm adding a cold store the size of the barn. The crop is the same. What changes is when you can sell it.
Good: an official cost estimate for a hybrid plant, a permit, and a live tender with a development bank. Croatian buyers get a local reference point for solar with four-hour storage at scale.
Bad: EUR 65 million covers both parts and HEP does not split battery cost from solar cost. Up to 200 MWh is a ceiling, not a final spec. No buyer for the power is named.
Ugly: construction starts in 2027, so delivery comes after that. A business hoping this plant lowers its own bill soon is looking at the wrong timeline.
