Australia switched on its first eight-hour grid battery. It fills up at noon and runs into the night.
RWE's Limondale pack in New South Wales is 50 MW / 400 MWh. Electrek reports it is online on the national market after AEMO sign-off.
Picture a cold-store warehouse at 7pm. The roof went quiet hours ago. The compressors did not. Until now, most big Australian grid batteries were built to sprint for one or two hours. This one is built to walk for eight.
Electrek reports RWE's Limondale battery, near Balranald in south-west NSW, next to RWE's Limondale solar farm, uses 144 Tesla Megapacks. Size on the page: 50 MW / 400 MWh. It can charge at about 100 MW and discharge at 50 MW — fill in roughly four hours of cheap midday sun, then stretch that energy across the evening and into the night.
For a factory or logistics shed watching the bill, the workplace meaning is simple. More long batteries on the grid are a bet that lunchtime solar gets moved to the dinner peak. That is the same shape of problem a buyer faces on site: panels make power when the sun is up; the load often peaks later. The grid version of that story just got a longer box.
Good: a public COD for Australia's first eight-hour project, backed by a NSW long-duration tender and a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement — a government revenue floor that made the long battery financeable. Electrek says two more LTESA-backed eight-hour batteries are in the NSW pipeline.
Bad: this is a utility project beside a solar farm, not a voucher on your warehouse invoice. The Megawatt and Megawatt-hour figures are the project's nameplate. They are not your site size, your quote, or your payback.
Ugly: short batteries still dominate the fleet. One eight-hour site does not flatten every evening peak on every feeder. If someone sells you "eight-hour economics" for a two-hour pack, the maths and the box do not match. Electrek does not publish a commercial site payback. Neither do we.
