A German steel mill bought solar - and the right to run the batteries when the plant needs power
Zelestra and Salzgitter Flachstahl signed what they call Germany's largest hybrid solar-plus-storage PPA. The steel buyer gets 158 GWh a year of solar and direct control of 79 MW / 237 MWh of batteries.
Picture a steel line that does not stop for lunch. The roof of a solar farm does. The awkward bit is the gap - cheap midday power when the panels are loud, and expensive evening power when the mill is still hungry.
ESS News reports Zelestra and German steelmaker Salzgitter Flachstahl signed a long-term hybrid power purchase agreement for two new plants in Brandenburg and Thuringia. On the page: 147 MW of solar paired with 79 MW / 237 MWh of battery storage. Salzgitter will buy 158 GWh of solar generation a year from both sites. The batteries charge only from surplus solar. The steel company directly controls when those batteries discharge so the solar lands when the plant needs it.
Think of it like a thermos for factory power. You fill it when the sun is pouring in. You pour it out when the night shift or the evening tariff would otherwise hurt.
For a workplace buyer, the meaning is not "Germany went green." It is a contract shape. Solar alone is a midday product. A hybrid deal with buyer dispatch is a try at matching that midday product to a real industrial load - without inventing a megawatt size for your own site.
Good: a named industrial offtaker, published solar and battery sizes, and clear language that the buyer runs the battery schedule. That is closer to how a procurement manager thinks than a pure green certificate.
Bad: this is a German steel PPA, not an Australian, Malaysian, or Irish voucher on your installer invoice. The 147 MW / 79 MW / 237 MWh figures are the project's nameplate. They are not your quote.
Ugly: hybrid PPAs still need grid rules, financing, and operating skill. ESS News does not publish Salzgitter's bill saving or payback. Neither do we. If someone sells you "steel-mill economics" for a two-hour shed battery, ask for the contract - not the headline.
