Victoria's state utility bought into a long battery - and booked half its power for fifteen years for business customers

Victoria's State Electricity Commission is putting up to AU$43 million into the Baranduda battery near Wodonga and taking 50% of its output for 15 years. The box is 400 MW / 1.86 GWh - about 4.65 hours - aimed at late 2028.

A retailer that sells power to workplaces has a simple problem when the sun drops: it still has customers on after dark. Victoria's state-owned SEC just locked a slice of a long battery to help cover that.

Energy-Storage.News reports the SEC will invest up to AU$43 million for a stake in the Baranduda Electrical Energy Reserve beside the Wodonga Terminal Station and the Victoria-NSW interconnector. Co-developers: Aware Super and Birdwood Energy. The deal also gives the SEC 50% of the battery's output under a 15-year agreement. ESS News says that offtake supports the SEC's commercial retail book - including hospitals, schools and government sites. RenewEconomy adds the remaining half is to be sold on the merchant market.

The plant is four 100 MW units, 400 MW / 1.86 GWh, about 4.65 hours of duration - the longest grid-scale battery duration claimed for Victoria on these pages. Construction is due to start in November 2026, with operations targeted for late 2028. The Victorian government frames it as the first public-private renewable project pairing the state with a superannuation fund. Individual equity splits and total project cost are not published on the Energy-Storage.News page.

Think of the SEC's half-share as a reserved night shift on a shared warehouse fridge. The state retailer pays to own a slice and to call half the cold space when its business customers need power after sunset. The other half of the fridge still goes to whoever pays merchant prices that hour.

Good: a published offtake share, a 15-year term, a duration number, and a clear use - firming supply for the retailer's commercial and public customers. That is buyer-readable: who gets the power, for how long, and why the battery is long.

Bad: this is a Victorian utility-scale deal, not a voucher on your warehouse inverter quote. The AU$43 million is the SEC's investment cap on this page - not the full build cost. We do not know Aware Super's or Birdwood's exact equity slices from the cited story.

Ugly: commercial operation is late 2028. Merchant half means price risk still sits in the market for the uncontracted share. We will not invent your bill saving, a data-hall load, or a payback from this announcement.

Soft next step: if your Victoria site brief asks how a retailer can firm evening load with storage, start with duration and offtake share - then a short consult at Sovryn Energy /consult if you want that contract shape translated against your meter.
